Marquette University Seal

August 25, 2014

Dear Marquette students,

Dr. Michael R. Lovell, president

Welcome to fall semester 2014! Whether you’re among our 2,000-plus first-year students, nearing the end of your studies or somewhere in between, I offer my prayers and best wishes for your success here at Marquette University.

I’ll be in touch again after Labor Day with more semester-starting information. Right now, though, I want to extend two invitations for this week.

The first is to a prayer vigil to remember the outstanding life and spirit of our alumnus James Foley, Arts ’96, who died tragically last week. The vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 26, in Church of the Gesu, 1145 W. Wisconsin Ave.

The second is to be part of my new running group, which will be meeting twice weekly (11:45 a.m. on Tuesdays and 8 a.m. on Fridays starting outside St. Joan of Arc Chapel). Even though I run quite a bit, the running group will be designed for runners of all experience levels.

One important insight for this week and throughout the entire year is the continuing need to take steps to stay safe. An integral part of the Jesuit university experience is being located in an urban community. Because of that, Marquette invests significant resources to ensure that our students, faculty and staff feel safe and secure while on campus. The university is your partner in promoting safety, and you can find many useful personal safety tips online courtesy of our Department of Public Safety.

It appears the warmest day of the year has been saved for our first day back to classes. Nonetheless, I hope you can keep cool as we start classes and continue our mission toward excellence, faith, leadership and service.

Best,
Michael R. Lovell
President
