Rev. Joseph M. O'Keefe, S.J. Joseph M. O’Keefe, S.J., was elected to the Marquette University Board of Trustees in 2007. He was named dean of the Lynch School of Education at Boston College in 2005, after serving for a year and a half as interim dean and two years as associate dean. He has been at the Lynch School since joining the faculty as an assistant professor in 1991. Father O’Keefe has served as coordinator of the Educational Administration Program and of the Catholic School Leadership Program at the Lynch School.

He has also served for several years as coordinator of the Spiritual Growth Leadership Seminar and Selected Programs for Improving Catholic Education (SPICE), both jointly sponsored by Boston College and the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). He is director of the research center at NCEA.

In 2004 Father O’Keefe received the F. Sadlier Dinger Award for outstanding contributions to Catholic education.

Father O’Keefe received his doctorate in education from Harvard University, concentrating on administration, planning, and social policy. A native of Salem, Mass., he is a graduate of Holy Cross College and earned a master’s degree in French literature from Fordham University as well as a master’s degree from Harvard in educational administration.

He also received a M.Div. and S.T.L. from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass. He has been a member of the Society of Jesus since 1976, and was ordained a priest in 1986.

Father O’Keefe was visiting associate professor and holder of the Jesuit Chair in Education at Georgetown University, 1999–2000. He is the contributing co-editor of The International Handbook of Catholic Education: Challenges for School Systems in the 21st Century ( Springer, 2007) and was the lead co-author of Sustaining the Legacy: Urban Catholic Elementary Schools in the United States, published by National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) in 2004. He is editor or co-editor of 12 books and author or co-author of more than 42 articles and book chapters on Catholic education and education leadership.
