Course approval and scheduling are very important for a positive study abroad experience. Discuss your plans to study abroad with your academic adviser and/or college liaison as soon as possible and consider its impact on your progress toward graduation.
Student responsibilities
When seeking transfer credit for a course, students must submit a course description and the number of contact hours for that course. Students are responsible for confirming that their program provides grades or an evaluation of their work and making sure the above conditions are met. Transfer credit can't be guaranteed if these requirements are not satisfactorily completed. Certificates of attendance and/or completion do NOT meet the requirements for transfer of credit.
Visit the links below for the specific course approval procedures for your college.
*Courses taken as a part of Marquette-sponsored or faculty-led programs are all considered Marquette courses. These courses do not require approval, and grades will appear on your Marquette transcript and are calculated into your Marquette GPA. If you have questions about how these courses will apply to your degree requirements, please contact your college liaison.
**Students are not permitted to audit courses abroad, with the exception of students studying on the Marquette en Madrid program. Students wishing to audit a course in Madrid must speak with the Resident Director for approval.
All students seeking academic credit must have courses pre-approved according to the Office of International Education application procedures and the procedures established by their college. Courses taken abroad by students who have not gone through the official study abroad procedures at Marquette will not be approved for credit. For college-specific procedures, see above.
Transfer credit is guaranteed based on the following:
• The course has been pre-approved
• A student earns a grade or equivalent grade of C or better
• An official transcript is sent to the Office of the Registrar
(Certificates of attendance and/or completion do NOT meet the requirements for transfer of credit)
Credits from institutions abroad transfer, but grades may not be incorporated into your Marquette GPA. The fact sheet at the top of each program description indicates what type of credit is offered.
Please note: For programs administered by the College of Business Administration, transcripts will be sent to the Office International Business Studies and processed automatically (i.e., students do not need to make any special arrangements to obtain their transcripts).
