As an intern at CCDI, my focus has been on establishing the Fairtrade Association of Craft South Africa (FACSA). The aim of this national body is to promote fair trade, assist South African craft producers, and support Broad-based Economic Empowerment (BEE) efforts. Although the vision is for a national fairtrade craft organization, a provincial FACSA Western Cape has been formed as the first step towards this goal.
FACSA (WC) has set goals that it hopes to accomplish in the upcoming year. One of the primary goals of FACSA is to improve communication on a local and national level through emails, telephone calls, and the postal service. The organization hopes to develop a website to facilitate communication as well as advertise and promote the FACSA label. Another goal of FACSA is to educate about fairtrade through small presentations and the distribution of informational brochures. As an intern, one must contribute to all of the above tasks; the main task for this semester, however, is to pilot a fairtrade registration and membership program in the Western Cape. The purpose of the pilot program is to test registration on a sample group and correct flaws in the membership process. This will allow FACSA (WC) to register more members that can contribute to the fairtrade craft movement and lead to the formation of a strong national craft body in the future.
