JOHN P. LYNCH,
ARTS '64
 After graduating from Marquette, John attended Northwestern
University School of Law, where he served as notes and comments
editor of the Law Review. He was also elected to the Order of
the Coif, an award that recognizes the top students in the graduating
class.
Following
law school, John served on active duty with the U.S. Navy for
three years before embarking on a distinguished 40-year career
as a trial lawyer, handling federal and state court cases throughout
the United States.
He
started out with the law firm Kirkland and Ellis in Chicago
and was named a partner in 1973. In 1976, John co-founded the
firm of Hedlund, Hunter and Lynch, which later merged with Latham & Watkins,
an international law firm, in 1982.
During
his years with Latham, John has served as managing partner
of the Chicago office, as a member of the firm’s executive
committee and vice chair of the litigation department. In late
2001, John moved to France to open the firm’s Paris and
Brussels offices and to assist in the integration of its overall
European operations. He returned to Chicago in 2006 and continues
to enjoy a full-time practice.
“Being
a lawyer is extremely rewarding and fulfilling. I enjoy the personal
contact with clients as well as the interchanges that occur within
our judicial system. You are constantly being asked to find solutions
to complex legal issues or ways to resolve matters amicably and
efficiently,” he says. “Successfully arguing your
client’s case to a judge or jury is the ultimate high for
a trial lawyer.”
John
and his wife, Judy Godvin Lynch, Bus Ad ’66, maintain
strong ties to the Marquette community. John is now serving
as a member of Marquette’s Board of Trustees for a second
time. Their daughters Julie and Jennifer graduated from Marquette
in 1992 and 1995, respectively.
The
family also funded the Patrick Sean Lynch Reception area
in the Alumni Memorial Union and continues to support the Lynch
Family Scholarship Fund, awarded to provide financial assistance
to Marquette students from the Chicago area enrolled in the
colleges of Arts and Sciences or Business Administration.
