Robert G. van Schoonenberg, Arts ’68

Robert van SchoonenbergUnlike the labels made by his former employer, Avery Dennison Corp., Robert G. van Schoonenberg is not pressure-sensitive.

“I can evaluate the world around me and make the right decisions without a great deal of angst and uncertainty,” Bob says, thanks to the “solid base” his Marquette liberal arts education gave him.

“I learned at Marquette the value of hard work, preparation and focus,” he says. “I also learned the importance of living life with an ethical compass to guide you through the many situations for which there are no clear-cut answers.”

Bob’s philosophical grounding has served him well during a long, successful career. Leaving Marquette with a bachelor’s degree in economics, he earned an M.B.A. and a law degree, spent seven years at Gulf Oil and then joined Avery. He worked there for 27 years before retiring as executive vice president and chief legal officer at the end of 2008.

Rather than grabbing a book and heading for the beach near his Southern California home, though, Bob leaped into three more high-profile roles: chairman and CEO of Baypoint Capital Partners, chairman of the board of Premiere Entertainment, and managing partner of General Counsel Law Partners.

Bob spends his spare time serving on various corporate, civic and philanthropic boards; establishing scholarships at Marquette and his post-grad schools, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Michigan; and traveling, skiing and motorcycling with his wife and two grown sons. In 2003, Bob and one of his sons rode their Harleys from Los Angeles to Milwaukee for Harley-Davidson’s 100th anniversary celebration, visiting 12 national parks along the way.
