Mentee gets behind-the-scenes look at mentor's career
Ruane and Lada When Karlie Ruane, Comm '15, met mentor Jen Lada, Comm '02, Comcast SportsNet anchor, and beat reporter for the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears during last Saturday night's Sox game at U.S. Cellular Field, it provided a great start to their relationship. Karlie says that Jen has already been helpful with establishing their program goals for the coming months as well as providing broadcasting insights.

With fall break Oct. 16-19, consider a job shadow opportunity for a behind-the-scenes look at career opportunities to help your mentee.

Five Questions With...Joe Miotke, Eng '95, Law '99
(Nicolas Schmidt, Eng '17, mentee)

Jeff Miotke1. This is the second year you are serving in the MUAA Mentor Program. Why?
I had a tremendous experience last year and built a great relationship with my mentee. Moreover, the program is a great way for alumni to re-engage with the undergraduate program and provide meaningful service and assistance to the university.

2. What suggestions would you have for mentees?
Don’t be shy about reaching out to your mentor for advice and assistance. You will get out of the mentor/mentee relationship whatever you put into it.

3. What qualities do you look for and appreciate in the people you work with or hire?
I look for a positive mindset, strong work ethic and willingness to collaborate.

Mentee who secured full-time position thanks to mentor meets her for first time

Hunt and Daily Talk about a successful long-distance mentor partnership. Thanks in large part to the strength of their mentor partnership during last year's mentor pilot program, Dr. Mary Hunt, Arts '72, helped her mentee Mallory Daily, Arts '14, secure a full-time position following graduation with Interfaith Voices, a religious public radio show based in the Washington, D. C., area. They recently met for the first time. “I’ve already found a great community here in the D.C. area dedicated to justice and peace,” says Mallory. “Mentoring is about creating colleagues, in my view. I’ve found a new colleague here in the justice community,” adds Dr. Hunt, who is mentoring Will Hyland, Arts '16, this year.
