What is the general application process and timeline?
PLEASE NOTE: Organizations that sponsor participants may have internal processes that require different application deadlines. Please check with the appropriate person(s) in your organization to be certain you know whether your organization falls into that category.

What is the time commitment?
On average students spend approximately 16-20 hours per month on their involvement with Future Milwaukee. Here is a breakdown:
- Sessions: The class meets two times each month on Monday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Sessions begin in September and run through early May - total of six (6) hours or less per month.
- Project Work: Students will be placed in small groups to practice leadership and community engagement skills for the purpose of developing and implementing a project. It is expected that students will hold additional meetings with their project group outside of sessions (a limited amount of additional time is given at the end of each Monday night session for the project work). Assuming recommended processes and tools are used, students take between ten (10) and 15 hours per month for project work.
- Coaching: Participants are required to participate in a one on one coaching session the first half of the program year (before December) with an optional session the second half of the program year. Each one on one coaching session is approximately 1.5 hours. Project groups will also meet for coaching one time the first half of the program year for approximately 30 minutes (usually as part of a group project meeting).
What if I am unable to make a session?
Participants should not plan to miss any sessions. However, life happens and consideration will be made for absences that cannot be helped. Please notify the executive director as soon as possible. Remember: As leaders, when you commit to the program up front, you commit not only to yourself, but to your cohort, project group members and guest leaders of the program.
Will food be available?
Healthy snacks (with some candy treats!) and beverages are available at the sessions. Participants are, however, encouraged to eat before they arrive or bring something with them to the session.
What does graduation from Future Milwaukee mean?
Graduation means that you have participated in the program, challenged yourself, and taken every opportunity to learn about the community and grow as a leader. Regular attendance and project group involvement is required in order to receive a certificate of completion.
How much does the program cost?
The cost is $2,100 for the entire nine-month program.
What does the cost include?
- Twenty-two program sessions
- Two team coaching sessions
- Two one-on-one leadership coaching sessions
- The opportunity to build relationships with other incredible students, to connect with Future Milwaukee alumni, to meet community leaders who contribute greatly to the health and well-being of our community, and to be part of a growing community of more than 1,500 alumni.
What occurs in the Monday night sessions?
- In September and October, Monday night sessions are focused on Emotional and Social intelligences - Exploring Conflict Management and Group Dynamics. This is the foundation of your individual and group development.
- From November through April, students visit organizations and spaces throughout the Greater Milwaukee area that are aligned with the topic for each evening. Topics include (but are not limited to) Urban Development and Transportation, Early Childhood Education, Racism, and Water Resources. At each of these sessions, 3-5 guests who are experts and leaders in the topic area for the evening, gather for a conversation (not presentations) facilitated around questions that help to deepen the cohort's understanding and appreciation for the complexity of the topic. Students are encouraged to ask questions during these sessions. Guests leave midway through the session, and students continue their conversation with each other, often leading to activities and conversations on the topic or related questions. All of the sessions are facilitated by the Executive Director.
How are the groups selected and what does the Group Project involve?
- Groups are assembled by the Executive Director in order to ensure to the greatest extent possible that groups are highly diverse. These groups of 3 or 4 stay together for the entire program year so as to use the process as a lab, practicing new found skills and using tools that are discussed at the start of the year. Ultimately this is the test for how to convert a group of individuals into a team!
- In order to experience the value of community engagement, the assets in Milwaukee (often hidden to those who rely on expressways!) and the complexities of an urban area, are explored both in sessions and as groups engage in project development. This year (as with last year) students will be connected to a community contact person with the expectation that a project will surface from engagement with that individual and his/her community connections.
Can I talk to recent students in the program to learn more about their personal experience? Of course! I encourage you to do so. Contact me for a list of possible referrals. I do need to gain permission to share their email addresses.
How do I pay for the program?
There are typically three ways participants pay for the program: Organization sponsorship, individual funding and, if necessary, financial assistance. Please note that scholarships are very limited.
- Organization sponsorship. Your organization may be willing to sponsor you. Check with your supervisor or human resource department. If your organization would like more information, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Individual funding. If you do not work for an organization that provides sponsorships, participants can choose to apply for the program and pay the $2,100 on their own.
- Financial assistance via scholarship. You can apply for financial assistance if covering the cost of the program is a significant concern. Financial assistance is competitive and there are extremely limited funds available. Be sure to research alternative ways to pay for this experience before you request a scholarship. The scholarship committee will want to know this has been done. Acceptance in the program is handled separately from awarding financial assistance.
How do I apply for a scholarship (financial assistance)?
The Future Milwaukee program offers a limited number of scholarships to qualified applicants. Please apply here by no later than July 15, 2018. Decisions regarding acceptance into the program area separate from the scholarship process.
When will I be notified if I receive a scholarship (financial assistance)?
Decisions regarding financial assistance will be finalized by an alumni scholarship committee in early August. Candidates will be notified by August 15, 2018 regarding their status. If you are accepted to the program prior to that time but do not get the necessary scholarship funds to participate, you are not bound by your acceptance and can withdraw with no penalty.
When will I get an invoice?
Invoices will be generated for full tuition ($2,100) minus any scholarships, applicable discounts, and/or bursar payments and emailed to you following your acceptance. If you notice an error on your invoice, please contact Christine Hill via email.
What are my payment options?
Payment in full is due by October 7, 2018. We accept MasterCard and Visa credit cards as well as checks. Please make checks payable to Marquette University. We also accept purchase orders from businesses. The purchase order on company letterhead must be received prior to the start of the program.
If your company doesn't use purchase orders and is going to pay your tuition, please have an authorized company representative fax or email a letter on company letterhead stating the company agrees to pay the tuition. If the company agrees to pay a portion of the tuition, please note that in the letter as well. Students are responsible for paying all tuition charges that their company will not cover by the October 7, 2018 due date.

Will I get a receipt for my payment?
Yes. Receipts are generated and sent to you after your payment has been processed.
What happens if I don't pay on time?
Students who do not pay the amount on time will be dropped from the program. We don't want to lose you as a student, but unfortunately we are not a lending institution and cannot make exceptions.
