News From The Chair
 Our first newsletter, published last fall, was accessed by more than 1000 alumni and was a great success. The featured stories on “Our History” and “Faculty: Current and Past” were particularly popular. In this issue, we will continue the “Our History” feature with a commentary on the University highlights in the 1940’s. The faculty column highlights Dr. William F. Millington a plant biologist in the department from 1959-1987, and Dr. Gail Waring, a cell biologist who joined the department in 1978, and currently directs our Summer Undergraduate Research Program. We are also excited to announce the addition of Dr. Lisa Petrella, who will join the department in August, and recognize the undergraduates and graduate students who recently received college and department awards.
Finally, with this issue we launch a Department Facebook page- we hope you will all “Like” it. We think Facebook will be a great venue for staying in contact and sharing experiences with each other.

Oliver H. Smith Memorial Lecture
"Extracellular Electron Transport:Breathing Rocks, Eating Electrons and Other Crazy Things!" is the topic of this year's Oliver H. Smith Memorial Lecture on Friday, May 18. This year's speaker is Dr. Kenneth Nealson Wrigley Professor of Geology, from the University of Southern California.
OUR HISTORY
The 1940’s were years of change for both Marquette University and the biology department. Enrollments and curriculums fluctuated in response to World War II, and the graduate school struggled to find its place in the modern world. This installment we will focus on Marquette University as a whole during and after the war years-while the next e-newsletter will focus more on the department during this period.

Past and Current
This issue we are again featuring a past faculty member, and a current faculty member of the department.
• Dr. William Millington, a plant biologist, was a compassionate and inspiring professor that embodied the teacher-scholar model in his many years (1959-1987) in the department.
• Dr. Gail Waring, a cell biologist in our department since the late 1970's, is passionate about involving undergraduates in her research on egg shell genes and proteins.
Faculty Highlights
While on sabbatical in Belgium, Dr. Edward Blumenthal has been investigating the fruit fly gene called drop-dead.
Undergraduate Student Highlights
The department is proud to recognize the outstanding research and academic achievements of our undergraduate students.
Graduate Student Highlights
Three students have successfully defended their doctoral theses, and scholarship awards have been awarded.
Biological Sciences Alumni
Since graduating from Marquette, our alumni have gone on to distinguish themselves in a variety of fields. While we are aware of the accomplishments of many, we'd love to hear your story. Update us on your achievements with an email to the department chair.
• Dr. Shannon Colton, who received both her bachelor’s degree (1997) and her doctorate (2002) from the department, now serves as program director at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Center for BioMolecular Modeling.
• Micaela Robb McGrath graduated with her bachelor’s degree from the department in December 2010, and is now in her first year of medical school at the University of Maryland.
• Corey Nemec (2010) has just been awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowship.
