News From The Chair

Dr. Robert Fitts As the 2012-13 year draws to a close, I am happy to report that the University was successful in attracting a new dean to serve the college. Dr. Rick Holz, currently the associate dean at Loyola University Chicago, will become our dean July 1st. To position ourselves for the future, the department held a retreat in early January, and outcomes included identifying our strengths and weaknesses, and the development of a strategic planning committee (more on this topic in the fall 2013 newsletter). In this issue, we are excited to share with you notable accomplishments for the year as well as our featured stories on departmental history, and faculty profiles. In this issue, we feature Dr. James Barrett who taught at Marquette from 1951 to 1986, and during that time inspired many students through his teaching of first year biology. Outside the classroom, Dr. Barrett was an important leader in the Milwaukee community particularly in the promotion of justice and peace. The current faculty feature is my story at Marquette. I thought it appropriate to include it in this issue as this is my final semester as department chair. Next August, Dr. Dale Noel will assume the duties of department chair. • Frank Rigo, Ph.D., a 2002 Biochemistry and Molecular Biology graduate, researches new antisense drug technology at Isis Pharmaceuticals.

• Benita Brink, Ph.D., earned her Ph.D. in 1989 at Marquette working in Dr. Dale Noel's lab. Dr. Brink inspires students in her current role as chair of the Biology and Earth Sciences Department at Adams State University.
