The Department of Biological Sciences presented two graduate student awards at the Welcome Back Luncheon in August.

john brennerThe Scholl Award, sponsored by the Dr. Scholl Foundation, goes to a graduate student who has performed outstanding research as demonstrated by the submission/publication of a first author manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal. This year’s recipient is John Brenner who received his Ph.D. last May. John was mentored by Dr. Allison Abbott, and is now a Postdoctoral Fellow at Washington University in St. Louis.

The Oliver H. Smith Award recognizes exceptional academic achievement by a graduate student in the Ph.D. program. This award will be based on grade point average (GPA), research activity, and scholarly achievements. This year’s recipient is Adam Lietzan, who is mentored by Dr. Martin St. Maurice.



The department is proud to welcome six new graduate students to the program this fall. Meghan Costello, Adele Gordon, Alexis Onderak, Carmela Rios and Yao Shi are beginning their laboratory rotations in the biological sciences track, and Jack Cleland is in the neuroscience track.

Cassie Nelson attended the American College of Sports Medicine Conference in San Francisco, CA last May. She presented a poster entitled " pCa-Force Relationship in Single Muscle Fibers: Effects of Acidosis and Exercise Training at Physiological Temperatures".

Ru Ya had a paper accepted to be published in the journal Zygote:
