Laurie Kontney is the Director of Clinical Education for the Physical Therapy Department at Marquette University. Laurie received her bachelor of science degree in physical therapy at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, her master of science degree in physical therapy with an emphasis in acute neurological conditions and education at the Finch University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School (now Rosalind Franklin University) and her transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Simmons College in Boston. Her primary responsibilities at Marquette include development and maintenance of clinical education sites, facilitation of the clinical education site selection process, teaching and research in clinical education and teaching the patient management sequence and the Clinical Issues and Decision Making course. In addition, Laurie coordinates an ethics discussion board and teaches the legal aspects of patient care content. Laurie continues to practice in the clinic 1 day a week with emphasis in acute care, outpatient neurology, inpatient rehabilitation and subacute/long term care.

Laurie is an American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Certified Trainer for the APTA Voluntary Clinical Instructor Education and Credentialing Program, both level I and level II courses. In addition, Laurie has presented on numerous clinical education topics to include: Ability-Based Assessment using the Generic Abilities; basic clinical instructor training; collaborative learning and alternative models of clinical education; use of clinical evaluation tools to assess clinical performance; utilizing and working with student and clinical instructor learning style inventories to facilitate learning; dealing with the challenging student; legal issues in clinical education; adult learning principles; communication skills; optimizing patient outcomes through the understanding of learning and personality styles; and professional issues and concerns in physical therapy.
