What is EMMAUS?
EMMAUS (Embracing Many Minds, All United in Solidarity) is a holistic leadership program that equips Milwaukee high school students with tools such as gift identification, goal setting and decision-making skills, and confidence building strategies as they discover and create their paths for the future. High school participants will discover their gifts and passions and, through self-reflection and group discussion, begin the process of discerning their vocations.
As the program’s facilitators, Marquette University students serve as mentors and share with the high school students their own stories and experiences with discernment. During the fall semester, Marquette students will gather on campus several times for brief meetings or training sessions on the central themes of EMMAUS. They will then facilitate three evening workshops for high school students, which will be held at Casa Romero in the spring.
Goals of EMMAUS
- Self-awareness:
Through reflection and sharing, high school students will identify their passions and the strengths and gifts that will assist them in achieving their goals. They will also recognize areas where additional growth and maturity are necessary.
- Mission Identification & Discernment:
Students will practice strategies for discernment, a process that will guide them in identifying and pursuing their vocation. They will recognize that they have something important to contribute to the world and will be motivated to strive for realization of their dreams. With practice, students will understand the difference between choosing a career and embracing a personal, heart-felt calling.
- Holistic Leadership:
Students will acquire an awareness of their intrinsic self-worth and will recognize the dignity and gifts of others. This will inspire students to respect themselves, affirm their peers, and become positive agents of change in their communities.
- Community-building & Bridge-building:
University students will enter into supportive, mentoring relationships with central-city teens, fostering a greater sense of trust and mutual respect as the group learns and grows together.
