The minutes of the October 9, 2003 were unanimously approved.

The subcommittee discussed the draft document concerning the September 2003 changes made to the faculty handbook and agreed that the changes entailed substantive shifts in policy.  It was proposed that the library accumulate and maintain complete versions of the faculty handbooks, thus creating a permanent history of policy changes.  The document was unanimously approved with the addition of the recommendation that all handbooks be retained by the library.  The report will be forwarded to the Committee on Faculty.

Discussion turned to the draft of our proposed policy on program elimination, specifically, whether to include the words suspension and elimination.  It was proposed that the draft make explicit that the process applies to the elimination or to the suspension of a program of study for some specified duration.  The subcommittee unanimously approved the document with that change in wording and it will be forwarded to the Committee on Faculty.  A subcommittee of the SAA will attend the December COF meeting to entertain discussion and to answer questions regarding the proposed policy.

Finally, the subcommitee discussed procedures for investigating the impact of the CORE curriculum on faculty.  It was decided that we should invite faculty to express their reactions to the CORE and decide at our next meeting if there are compelling issues on which the subcommittee should focus inquiry and discussion.

The next meeting will be held on January 22, 2004.
