URBAN JOURNALISM WORKSHOP
June 15–27

The Urban Journalism Workshop at Marquette University is an intense two-week program focusing on multimedia news gathering. Students utilize backpacks of digital equipment to cover events and interview Milwaukee newsmakers.

The workshop was developed to encourage high school students to pursue communication careers. Most students are from Milwaukee and surrounding areas.

  • Live in university housing during two-week stay
  • Use the urban location for assignments
  • Conduct interviews with Milwaukee newsmakers
  • Receive instruction in news, feature, and sports writing
  • Learn to write for the Web
  • Prepare photos, slideshows, podcasts, videos for the Web
  • Attend editing sessions with professionals from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
  • Work together to publish the online Urban Voice
