Marquette Student Awards, 2016 – 17
Under my advisement, student journalists for the Marquette Wire won 37 local, state regional and national awards for journalistic excellence. The three national awards came from the Society of Professional Journalists, which honored our students’ work in three mediums: the Marquette Tribune, the Marquette Journal, and MUTV.

UWM Student awards, 1996 – 2014
Under my direction, students in my television news reporting and producing classes won nearly 250 awards in contests for journalistic excellence. In 2014, UWM PantherVision, the weekly television newscast produced by students in my television news reporting and producing classes, became the first collegiate news organization ever to win a national Edward R. Murrow award from the Radio Television Digital News Association. PantherVision was named best newscast in six states by the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association five times, and best newscast in the state by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association six times. PantherVision has also received three national Mark of Excellence awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, including one for best newscast, and more than 100 awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.

Professional awards, 1980 - 1997
In my 17-year tenure as a journalist and news manager at three Wisconsin television stations, I won nearly 50 awards for excellence in broadcast journalism, earning a national reputation for my commitment to quality in writing, reporting and news management. In 1992 alone, I won nine first-place awards from the Radio-Television News Directors Association, the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, Associated Press, and the Milwaukee Press Club. I was also honored by the Wisconsin Supreme Court for my work as broadcast pool coordinator for the trial of Jeffrey Dahmer.

Why Marquette

I’m convinced it was a match made in heaven. Just a couple of weeks into a New Year’s resolution of getting back to attending to my faith, along came a couple of e-mails asking if I would be interested in applying for this job. The opportunity to work at a Jesuit university, with an office just a few pew lengths from Gesu church, is simply incredible. To work with students so committed to social justice, to help mold them as journalists and as communicators, to teach them to do journalism that matters, to be part of Marquette’s commitment to cura personalis, and to spend every day in such a caring work environment is inspiring. It’s more than a new job, it’s a step in my faith journey.
