The Center for Teaching & Learning offers a series of workshops each semester focusing on e-teaching topics and skills that are useful in face-to-face, online and hybrid (combined online and face-to-face) teaching. All workshops will be offered in Raynor Library, Room 330B or 320A.

Workshops and courses are open to anyone currently teaching at Marquette University and graduate students enrolled in the Preparing Future Faculty and Professionals (PFFP) Program.

Online registration is suggested but not required.

TRACK REQUIREMENTS

(1)Participants who wish to earn the E-Teaching Track must attend four sessions, although not necessarily all in the same semester. Sessions will be repeated each semester with new ones added on a regular basis.

(2) After completing four sessions, participants will be required to submit a written plan to incorporate a new technology tool into their classroom.

D2L TRACK

eTEACHING TRACK

 

Become proficient in use of the learning management site Desire2Learn (D2L). These workshops focus on the different tools available in D2L, from a technical perspective as well as an overview of best practices for implementing each tool in your courses. Track Requirements: Participants who wish to complete the D2L track must attend three workshops, although not necessarily all in the same semester.


These workshops focus on e-teaching topics and skills that are useful in face- to-face, online and hybrid (combined online and face-to-face) teaching. After completing four sessions, participants will be required to submit a written plan to incorporate a new technology tool into their classroom.

Online Facilitation Course: A three week online mini-course that provides an inside look and explores the best practices for facilitating online or blended courses.

D2L Start Up:  D2L Start Up is designed for people who are starting to use D2L. The session will begin with an overview of the tools available in D2L along with ideas on how to use the different tools. We will then demonstrate how to create a profile and news items, and how to edit the notifications you receive. We will also go over how to create and upload content.

Teaching in Culturally Inclusive Classrooms: During this session we will discuss the importance of intercultural competence for faculty and students. We will examine different scenarios where culture directly affects learners’ performance and present strategies to address cross-cultural differences in face-to-face and online courses.

(NEW this Spring!) How Learning Works Course:
An eight week online course which explores the application of the seven principles of learning described in the book How Learning Works to your instructional practice. A copy of the book will be provided to each participant.

Assessment Tools: Rubrics and Dropbox:  During the session we will focus on the Rubrics and the Dropbox tools in D2L. In addition to learning the technical aspect, we will discuss best practices for using these tools in your courses. If you have a rubric that you use in your classes, please feel free to bring it to the session. You can also bring your syllabus to use as a guide to start creating folders in your Dropbox based on your course structure. We will have some time to start creating!

Creating Multi Media in D2L: Best practices for video and multi-media creation: This workshop will provide an overview the instructional media production process. Participants will be given tools to assist with planning, recording, editing and distribution of media projects. Topics will include Studio & Field Video production options and other use and distribution resources available at MU.

(NEW this Spring!) Course Design Seminar:
A seminar that provides a collaborative space for participants to redesign a course by effectively integrating technology. This course is offered in a blended format, combining online activities, individual consultations with your coach, and group discussions.

Discussions in D2L:  During the Discussions in D2L session participants will learn how to create and manage forums and topics. We will also discuss best practices, benefits, and challenges of using online discussions in your courses, and provide some example activities.

Collaborative Work Online:Collaboration is key for students to be successful in online learning. This session we will focus on strategies for designing effective group work for online learning environments. We will also discuss the benefits and potential barriers that accompany group work. To conclude, attendees will work together to create a team charter for group projects in their courses.
 

Making your D2L site Accessible to Students with Disabilities Using Universal Design:  During this session we will discuss how to make your D2L content accessible and ADA compliant. To do this, we will review the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) , view examples of D2L content that is compliant, and go over the resources available through the Office of Disability Services (ODS) at Marquette.

Visual Design: Making Your Courses Visually Appealing and Conducive for Learning: The use of visuals and text to convey information has a direct effect on learners’ attention and comprehension of the material. This workshop focuses on the principles of good visual design to improve student learning in online learning environments. We will discuss the importance of visual design and identify best practices, in addition to showing D2L features that you can use to make your course visually appealing. In addition, you will have the opportunity to brainstorm with your colleagues about ways to apply visual design principles to your course.
 

Quizzes in D2L:  Get familiarized with the Quiz tool in D2L through a demonstration of how to use the Question Library, and how to create, edit, and grade quizzes. Learn how to edit quiz features, such as the restrictions and the submissions view, and how to create quizzes with randomized questions.

Academic Integrity: An overview of the new policies and procedures surrounding academic misconduct. Best practices to help prevent academic misconduct, including the effective use of TurnItIn, will be introduced along with an update on the results of the new procedures.
 

D2L Gradebook:  During this session we will walk you through the Setup Wizard to set the general preferences of your Gradebook. We will then demonstrate how to create categories and items, how to enter grades, and how to connect grade items to other assessments in D2L, such as the Dropbox and Quizzes.
