Creating Quiz Questionsfor faculty

To help organize your questions, you can create sections relating to each quiz. This document will help you with the process of creating sections and questions. If you are new to working with Desire2Learn quizzes, refer to Creating a Quiz or Quizzing: Process Overview.

Sections provide a way to organize your quiz questions. Sections can be created based on the types of questions in the quiz. For example, the true/false questions could have their own section while multiple choice questions make up a different section. Or, a midterm or final test could have sections dividing the quiz into major units or chapters.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click QUIZZES.
    The Manage Quizzes dialog box appears.

  2. From the Current Quizzes list, click the appropriate quiz.
    The Edit Quiz dialog box appears.

  3. Select the Layout/Questions tab.

  4. Click ADD/EDIT QUESTIONS.
    The Create New Question or Section page appears.

  5. From the Question or Section pull-down list, select Section.

  6. Click GO.
    The New Section dialog box appears.

  7. In the General section, in the Section Name text box, type a name for the section.

  8. OPTIONAL: In the Message scroll box, type the desired section message.
    HINT: To use HTML to type your message, click HTML EDITOR.

  9. To specify how your section will appear, in the Display Options section, select show section name, insert a line break after section name, and/or display message and image.

  10.    Click SAVE.
       The new section is created and added to the Quiz Layout page.

The following table explains the different types of questions available for Desire2Learn quizzes. All question types include the option of providing custom feedback. Some questions include the feature of automatic grading, but some, such as Long Answer, do not.

Question Type Brief Description Automatic Grading
Multiple Choice Multiple choice questions have two or more options. Students select only one answer. ü
True or False Students select whether a question is true or false. ü
Long Answer Long answer questions are also known as essay questions. Students type their responses into a scroll box.  
Short Answer Students type their answers into a scroll box. Responses 3-6 words long are appropriate for short answer questions.  
Arithmetic This type of question requires mathematical calculation.  
Fill in the Blanks This question type evokes a one-word answer from students.  
Multi-Select Multi-select questions use checkboxes, allowing students to make more than one selection. ü
Matching Two columns of information are displayed and students must indicate the appropriate matches of information. ü
Ordering The students place answers in the correct order by typing a number next to each answer. ü

After creating the quiz sections, you can create several different types of questions for your quiz.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click QUIZZES.
    The Manage Quizzes dialog box appears.

  2. From the Current Quizzes list, click the appropriate quiz.
    The Edit Quiz dialog box appears.

  3. Select the Layout/Questions tab.

  4. Click ADD/EDIT QUESTIONS.
    The Create New Question or Section page appears.

  5. From the list, select the section that will contain the questions to be created.
    NOTE: An item is selected if a checkmark appears before it.

  6. From the Question or Section pull-down list, select the type of question you want to create.

  7. Click GO.
    A page relating to the selected type of question opens.

  8. FIll in the information as appropriate.
    NOTE: Options will vary depending on the type of quiz question.

    Option Description
    Title Including a title for your question is optional, but it may help in organizing your questions in the Question Library. The title of the question appears in the Question Library rather than the entire question text.
    Points This is the number of points the question is worth.
    Difficulty Assigning a difficulty can be helpful if you are weighting your questions. You can select difficulty settings of 1-5.
    Question Text This is the actual text of the question to be answered by the student. It can be written in plain text or HTML.
    Image Specifying an image to be displayed is optional.
    EXAMPLE: An instructor might want to display a chart to be analyzed before answering a question.
    Question Hint Creating a question hint is optional and can be written in plain text or HTML.
    Question Feedback Creating question feedback (comments) is optional and can be written in plain text or HTML.

  9. To preview the question, click PREVIEW.
    To save the question, click SAVE.
    To save the question and create another, click SAVE AND NEW.

  10. The new quiz questions are created.
