Setting Quiz Restrictionsfor faculty

Restrictions allow you to set the quiz availability time and date as well as how long students have to complete the quiz. You can also allow certain students to have different restrictions than the rest of the class; this can be helpful for students with special needs.

topSetting Quiz Availability

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click QUIZZES.
    The Manage Quizzes dialog box appears.

  2. Click the quiz you want to restrict.
    The Edit Quiz dialog box appears.

  3. Select the Restrictions tab.

  4. In the Availability section, from the Status pull-down list, select Inactive or Active.
    NOTE: A quiz will be visible to students only when the status is set to Active.

  5. Select Has Start Date.

  6. To select the quiz's starting date and time, use the pull-down lists.
    OR
    To select the date from a calendar, click SELECT DATE.

  7. Select Has End Date.

  8. To select the quiz's ending date and time, use the pull-down lists
    OR
    To select the date from a calendar, click SELECT DATE.

  9. Click SAVE QUIZ.
    The quiz availability is set.

topSetting Advanced Restrictions

Instructors can further restrict access to a quiz by requiring a password or requiring that the quiz be completed on a computer with a specific IP address.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click QUIZZES.
    The Manage Quizzes dialog box appears.

  2. Click the quiz you want to restrict.
    The Edit Quiz dialog box appears.

  3. Select the Restrictions tab.

  4. In the Optional Advanced Restrictions section, click EXPAND OPTIONAL ADVANCED RESTRICTIONS.
    The Edit Quiz dialog box refreshes the Advanced Restrictions section.

  5. To set a password, in the Password text box, type the desired password.

  6. To set a specific IP address, in the IP Restriction text boxes, type the desired IP address.
    HINT: This allows only users from the specified IP address to write to the quiz.

  7. Click SAVE QUIZ.
    The advanced restrictions are set.

topSetting Quiz Duration

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click QUIZZES.
    The Manage Quizzes dialog box appears.

  2. Click the quiz you want to restrict.
    The Edit Quiz dialog box appears.

  3. Select the Restrictions tab.

  4. In the Timing section, in the Time Limit text box, type the number of minutes you want to allow for students to complete the quiz.

  5. Select enforced.

  6. Select show clock.
    HINT: This option displays a count-down clock during the quiz, showing how much time is left to complete the quiz.

  7. To set a grace period for late quizzes, in the Grace Period text box, type the desired number of minutes.
    HINT: The grace period is a time limit for students to submit quizzes after the deadline without them being marked late.

  8. To set a limit for how late a quiz can be submitted, for Late Submissions, select the desired option:

    Option Implication
    Allow normal submission Late submissions are accepted, and no points are deducted.
    Use Late Limit of # minutes Late submissions are always accepted, but quizzes submitted after the Late Limit are marked 0 points.
    HINT: The Late Limit is the number of minutes after the deadline for quiz submission.
    Auto-Submit Attempt The quiz is automatically submitted when the student continues to work on the quiz after the deadline. If the student does not continue or submit the quiz after the deadline, the quiz will be marked as "attempt in progress" in the grading area.

  9.    Click SAVE QUIZ.
       The quiz duration is set.

topAdding Special Access

You can tailor restrictions for one or more students to accommodate special needs or situations. For example, if a student has a learning disability, you can allot them more time to complete the quiz than other students.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click QUIZZES.
    The Manage Quizzes dialog box appears.

  2. Click the quiz you want to restrict.
    The Edit Quiz dialog box appears.

  3. Select the Restrictions tab.

  4. In the Advanced Availability section, click ADD SPECIAL ACCESS.
    The Special Access dialog box appears.

  5. To allow a student to take the quiz at a different time than the rest of the class,
    1.    Select Assign special access period.
    2.    Select Has Start Date.
    3.    To select the quiz starting date and time, use the pull-down lists.
         OR
         To select the date from a calendar, click SELECT DATE.
    4.    Select Has End Date.
    5. To select the quiz ending date and time, use the pull-down lists.
      OR
      To select the date from a calendar, click SELECT DATE.

  6. To assign a different time limit than the rest of the class:
    1.    Select Assign special time limit.
    2.    In the Time Limit text box, type the desired number of minutes.
    3. Select enforce.

  7. To assign a different grace period than the rest of the class:
    1.    Select Assign special grace period.
    2. In the Grace Period text box, type the desired number of minutes.

  8. To assign a different late limit than the rest of the class:
    1.    Select Assign special late submissions.
    2. From the Late Limit pull-down list, select the desired option.

  9. In the User List section, select the user(s) to which the special quiz access will apply.
    NOTE: A user is selected if a checkmark appears next to his/her name.

  10. Click ADD SELECTED .

  11. Click SAVE QUIZ.
    The special access for the selected user(s) is set.
