Information on the Controlled Substance Education Requirement for DEA Registration (MATE act) / WI state requirement:
Confused about the new federal requirement for controlled substance providers to complete 8 hours of training on safe controlled substance prescribing as a condition of receiving or renewing a DEA registration?
Marquette and the WDA issued a joint statement in regard to the requirement and ways to meet it. Find more details here.
Starting October 1, there will be a requirement for 2 CE credits of opioid instruction in the new biennium. The course with Dr. Best listed above or the free course we offer in conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services will satisfy the requirement and count toward MATE credits if needed. Dr. Lobat Tayebi (PI), director of research and professor in the Department of Developmental Sciences, has received an NIH R21 award for the project entitled, “Synthetic osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP, Tooth-in-Eye surgery)”. The two-year (09/23-08/25) $425,000 award from the National Institutes of Health, National Eye Institute will feature the design and fabrication of a tissue-engineered synthetic keratoprosthesis for the OOKP surgery as a replacement of the osteo-odonto-lamina so that surgeons do not need to harvest teeth and surrounding jawbone of the patients, reducing patient morbidity. The synthetic tissue-engineered 3-D printed titanium alloy implant was patented by Dr. Tayebi working in the Delta Dental Research Laboratory as part of the Dental School’s portfolio of technologies. Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering is one of the Dental School’s major Research Themes. Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP) or Tooth-in-Eye surgery is an exceptional procedure that can save severely injured corneas, however, the procedure is limited by harvesting dental tissues which causes patient morbidity. The OOKP procedure is effective and capable of treating corneas after multiple corneal transplantation failures, chemical burns, corneal graft failure, or other pathologies.

Congratulations to Dr. Shivam Mehta, clinical assistant professor and orthodontics predoctoral program director in the Department of Developmental Sciences. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) has awarded the 2023 Wayne G. Watson Award for a research paper he co-authored on Vitamin E and Orthodontic Tooth Movement. The AAO is the world’s largest association for orthodontists. This prestigious award is given annually by the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics to the highest-rated biologic or experimental study during the previous year. Congratulations to Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim, clinical associate professor and director of pre-doctoral endodontics in the Department of Surgical Sciences. Dr. Ibrahim was recently elected to the American Association of Endodontics (AAE) Research and Scientific Affairs Committee by Dr. Craig Hirschberg, president-elect of the American Association of Endodontics (AAE). Dr. Ibrahim will serve a two-year term on the Research and Scientific Affairs Committee. Endodontic research drives innovation, technology, and improved patient care. Each new discovery strengthens the evidence basis for the success of root canal treatment. Science is the specialty’s best advocate for the value of saving teeth. The AAE strives to deliver professional advancement and personal fulfillment to its members through research opportunities and scientific resources. The Research and Scientific Affairs Committee guides the Association’s efforts in this arena. The committee also collaborates with others to ensure that members receive cutting-edge information about developments in endodontics.
