J. Matthew Gallman is Henry
R. Luce Professor of the Civil War Era and Director of the Civil
War Studies program at Gettysburg College. He is the author
of many books and articles on the Civil War era, including Receiving
Erin's Children: Philadelphia, Liverpool and the Irish Famine
Migration, 1845-1855 (2000); The North Fights the Civil War: The
Home Front (1994), and Mastering Wartime: A Social History of
Philadelphia During the Civil War (1990). He is general
editor of The Civil War Almanac (2002). His Klement Lecture
is drawn in part from his research on the nineteenth century writer,
lecturer, and political activist Anna Elizabeth Dickinson, who
is the subject of a forthcoming biography.
