Friends of the Marquette History Department

Spring 2006

The History Department wishes to acknowledge several generous benefactors, whose support continues to enhance our teaching and programs.

 

Raynor Memorial Libraries purchased more than fifty books over the last several months from a bequest made in memory of Monica Weber Gellott, 1949 graduate of Marquette University.  Her husband, Richard; son, Philip, and daughter, Laura, also graduated from Marquette.  Laura received both her BA and MA in history at Marquette and, after receiving her PhD at the University of Wisconisn-Madison, is now a professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.  One of Monica’s interests was medieval history, so Lezlie Knox, our medieval historian, helped select the volumes purchased in Monica’s name.

 

James Frey contributes money each year in support of Phi Alpha Theta, the history honor society.  The funds allow an undergraduate member (usually the president) to attend the Phi Alpha Theta conference, held in conjunction with the American Historical Association.

The Civil War Roundtable of Milwaukee contributes money annually to help defray the costs of graduate students in American history who present papers at professional conferences.

Finally, the Casper Endowment Fund supports, the annual Casper Lecture and two programs for PhD students: the Casper Teaching Fellowship and Casper Travel Grants (for graduate students in European history).  The Endowment was created by a donation from Dr. and Mrs. Wayne L. Ryan of Omaha.  Dr. Ryan was a student of Father Casper’s at Creighton University before Father Casper came to Marquette (he retired in 1974).
