Medical anthropologist and physician Dr. Paul Farmer is the Kolokotrones University Professor and Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women's Hospital, U.N. deputy special envoy for Haiti under Special Envoy Bill Clinton, and co-founder of the international health care nonprofit Partners In Health. Farmer and his colleagues in the United States and abroad have pioneered novel, community-based treatment strategies (including for HIV and tuberculosis) that demonstrate the delivery of high-quality health care in resource-poor settings.
As Marquette's Mission Week 2011 keynote speaker, Farmer embraced the theme of Imagine God by sharing stories and images of failed imagination in Haiti and elsewhere and by describing Partners In Health's work to bring health equity to its project sites around the world.
Each February, Marquette reflects on its Catholic, Jesuit identity during Mission Week. This year's theme, Imagine God, gave the Marquette community a chance to explore its imagination and experience how music, art, poetry, scholarship and reflection contribute to our understanding of God and the world.
