Milwaukee Summer Reading Project
In March of 2010, a report from the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) revealed that Wisconsin's African American fourth graders had the lowest reading scores in the United States. On April 1, 2010, in response to the shocking data, various local African American leaders convened to discuss the problem. The meeting evoked outrage and a call to action, which lead to the creation and launch of the Milwaukee Summer Reading Project.
This Project focuses on improving reading achievement over a six-week period during the summer and preventing summer regression utilizing research-based best practices in reading.
