The Alliance School of Milwaukee has just been granted top honors by the Wisconsin Charter Schools Association. Recognized with a Charter School of the Year Silver Award for High Achievement, the Alliance School was singled out for its strong academic performance, which takes place in the spirit of school reform and innovation.

Alliance opened in 2005 and serves as a haven for students in grades 6-12 who were harassed in regular school environments. This MPS charter school's year-round curriculum uses a combination of service learning and expeditionary learning approaches in which students are involved in community improvement projects and personal growth activities.

"We felt so proud to be nominated and chosen by our peers in the charter community," says Tina Owen, College of Education Alumna and Lead Teacher at Alliance, "Everyone we spoke to said 'You really deserve the award. I always love visiting Alliance.' It's a testimony to the culture we've created and to the relationships we've built."

Tina, who cofounded the school, earned her bachelor's degree from Marquette. Before helping to establish Alliance, she taught for seven years at Milwaukee’s Washington High School, where she served in several leadership roles as a faculty member and student adviser. She was recognized in Teen Ink magazine as an outstanding educator and recently was highlighted in Milwaukee Magazine for her work in the community. In 2008, she was honored with the Marquette University College of Education Young Alumna Award.
