EDPL Graduate Students Meet with Wis. Legislators

Released: 4/16/15

Marquette EDPL Graduate Students with Rep. Jon BrostoffDr. Ellen Eckman, Chair of the department of Educational Policy and Leadership, and Melissa Econom, Academic Coordinator, accompanied Rebecca Alt, Fonda Held, Erica Henderson, and Kathryn Howell, all graduate students in the Educational Policy and Foundations program in the College of Education, to Madison, Wisconsin on Tuesday, April 14 to attend the third annual Wisconsin Association of Colleges for Teacher Education conference.

The students met with four Milwaukee representatives in the Wisconsin State senate and assembly: Sen. Chris Larson, Rep. Chris Bowen (staff), Rep. Mandela Barnes, and Rep. Jonathan Brostoff to discuss education policy formation, teacher retention, and the proposed budget cuts to K12 public education and the UW higher education system.

In addition to meeting individually with Milwaukee representatives, Rep. Mandela Barnes introduced the four graduate students to the caucus where they were shocked to receive a standing ovation from the legislators in session.

According to Fonda Held, the trip to Madison was "a great opportunity to see how legislators become informed about education and policy-related issues," and allowed her and her colleagues to learn how they can become involved in policy development and advising after they graduate in 2016.
