COED Alumna Named 2009 Educator of the Year by Illinois Computing Educators

Released: 2/23/09

College of Education alumna, Melissa Gosche (2004), will be honored as 2009 Educator of the Year by the Illinois Computing Educators.  She will receive her award at the annual Illinois Computing Educators Conference on February 26 and 27, 2009.

Melissa, who will receive the award for her efforts to integrate technology into her curriculum, had this to say of her efforts.  "The courage my students’ possess inspires me daily to teach technology skills that most teachers would be afraid to even try. I do not accept the notion that at-risk students can’t understand 21st century technology and are not deserving of this technology because they do not have computers at home[...] The first time many of my students even saw a computer was at Kennedy School, which would scare even the most seasoned teacher, but I’m proud that I have accomplished something special within my classroom by providing a multitude of opportunities to use technology."

Melissa's work is evident, not only to her students, but also to her fellow colleagues. Kathleen Risolvo, who nominated Melissa for the ICE award, has this to say of her efforts. "Melissa is the most impressive educator I have seen.  Whether she is doing whatever it takes to secure the needed equipment to complete a project with her students, or assisting another teacher create an interactive lesson on their whiteboard, her dedication to the profession is incredible and I am thankful each day that I get to work with her.  She works as a leader and as a member of a team that is committed to preparing students for the future."

Melissa, who received her degree in English and Elementary Education at Marquette, currently teaches third grade in Schiller Park, IL at Kennedy Elementary School.

The mission of Illinois Computing Educators is to lead the educational community in enhancing learning through technology. ICE works toward these goals through the provision of professional development opportunities, advocacy, leadership, funding, and outreach activities.
