College of Education Welcomes New Faculty

Released: 9/4/15

The 2015-‘16 academic year brings new members of the College faculty. Joining the Educational Policy and Leadership Department (EDPL) are Dr. Sara Burmeister, Dr. Melissa Gibson, and Ms. Kirsten Lathrop.

Returning to her roots in EDPL after earning her Ph.D. from the College of Education in 1997, Dr. Burmeister brings 34 years of experience working in K-12 education as a teacher and in a variety of administrative roles, most recently as Superintendent of the Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District for the 14 years. Dr. Burmeister will be teaching in the Educational Administration program, helping to prepare future school leaders.

Dr. Gibson completed her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin Madison in Educational Studies and will be teaching Social Studies Methods courses for both elementary and secondary students in the Teacher Education Program. Moving to Milwaukee after teaching at a bilingual school in Guadalajara, Mexico, Dr. Gibson has taught both English and social studies at the high school level in a variety of settings, including the Chicago Public Schools.

Ms. Kirsten Lathrop, M.A., joined the College last spring as the Licensure Officer and Director of Field Placements after nearly 19 years of teaching. Prior to joining the College of Education at Marquette, she taught in the Milwaukee Public Schools as a regular education teacher, a literacy coach, and, most recently, as a special education teacher.

The College is pleased to welcome its new members to campus and looks forward to a successful and invigorating academic year.
