Required Coursework

Marquette's certificate program in secondary education is designed to meet the needs of the working professional with a bachelor's degree who wish to earn an initial Wisconsin middle/secondary (early adolescence-adolescence, grades 6-12) teaching license. This licensure program is aligned with the Wisconsin State Teaching Standards for Licensure and Professional Development.

Required courses (28 credits)

 

  • EDPL 244 Introduction to Schooling in a Diverse Society (3 credits)
  • A Course in Child/Adolescent Development (e.g. EDPL 247)*
  • A Foundations of Education course (e.g. EDUC 158-Philosophy of Education, EDPL 249- History of Education, EDPL 255- Sociological Foundations of Education (3 credits)
  • EDPL 215 Using Technologies for Instruction and Assessment (3 credits)*
  • EDPL 245 Differentiation of Instruction for Exceptional Learners (3 credits)
  • EDUC 128 Teaching in the Middle School (4 credits)
  • EDUC 125 Literacy in the Content Areas (3 credits)
  • A Specialized Advanced Methods course in the area of certification (e.g. English, Social Studies, Math, Science, Foreign Language (3 credits)
  • EDPL 229: Student Teaching Practicum  (3 credits)

  • Elective Graduate level course(s) in Content Area of Specialization (may be required)

*Note: Course work completed at the undergraduate level may reduce some of the above course requirements. A minimum of 33 graduate credits, however, must be completed  for the M.Ed. with a specialization in Secondary Education.  In addition, based on an analysis of the undergraduate transcript, students may be required to complete additional course work in their content area of certification to meet DPI certification requirements.

Clinical Experience Requirements

Clinical experience takes place in Milwaukee area schools. Placements are made by Marquette University's Director of Licensure.

Clinical experience will be structured in three phases:

  1. Orientation
  2. Induction
  3. Independent Teaching

During the first two phases, participants will observe, tutor, and provide small group instruction, completing a minimum of 100 hours of clinical field experience. Field experiences will be structured to aid participants in focusing on critical issues of instruction and classroom management. Before being approved for student teaching, participants will be required to:

  1. Satisfactorily complete all course work in the teacher certification program.
  2. Complete course work in areas of content deficiency if indicated on the Praxis II with a minimum QPA of 2.750.
  3. Demonstrate in course work and assignments the knowledge, skills, and dispositions related to the twelve teaching standards identified by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the Marquette University School of Education.
  4. Receive a satisfactory evaluation of a portfolio of evidence addressing the competencies identified by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (Communication skills, human relations/professional dispositions, content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and teaching practice).
