Dr. Lauren Leslie, Professor of Educational Policy and Leadership, has been awarded the rank of Professor Emeritus for career excellence in teaching, research, and service. Her work in literacy has been a credit to the School of Education, and her record is a testament to 33 years of dedicated service -- to her students, the community, and the university on the whole.
Dr. Leslie's teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels has focused on assessment and instruction for children who have difficulties learning to read. As a scholar, she enjoys a well earned national reputation in the field of literacy through her numerous articles in premier journals as well as chapters, and books. Lauren has been a regular presenter at major conferences such as the American Educational Research Association, the International Reading Association, and the National Reading Conference. Most recently, she co-authored a fourth edition of the Qualitative Reading Inventory (2006), a widely used assessment tool for evaluating students’ reading abilities from first grade through early high school with her colleague JoAnne Caldwell. This writing team published another work together in 2004, a volume entitled, Interventions Strategies to Follow Informal Reading Inventory Assessment: So, what do I do now?
Of special note, Dr. Leslie will be remembered for her more than quarter century assisting young children who are at-risk for reading failure. In her work as Director of the Hartman Literacy and Learning Center and the Family Literacy Project more than 1200 children have been helped, and over the course of her Marquette career, Lauren’s stewardship has touched nearly 2500 children overall.
Dr. Leslie has the distinction of having chaired both the Department of Educational Policy and Leadership (EDPL) and the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology (COEP). She has also served on countless committees and task forces, and has championed the cause of university women, including the mentoring of aspiring female faculty colleagues. Her work with the Association of Marquette University Women and the Gender Equity Task Force has been truly instrumental.
Dr. Leslie is also a wonderful and supportive wife and mother. She has been married for almost 33 years to Dr. Michael Hynan from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, and has one son, Chris, a graduate student who is currently enrolled in the prestigious Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa.
Please join the School of Education in congratulating our departing colleague and friend in the obtainment of this career milestone. |
