On the morning of October 23, the College of Education will host 40-50 middle school students from Racine and Milwaukee as part of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction's Urban Teacher World Exploration Program. Students will participate in a campus tour, and will have a chance to talk with current College of Education students during a panel discussion.
The Urban Teacher World Program is a pre-college program intended to create a comprehensive system to recruit, develop, and support a pool of diverse educators with the focus on potential educators currently attending high-needs schools. The program exposes students, especially students of color, to careers in education through teacher-centered conferences, college visitations, education fairs, and encourages active participation in future educators clubs. Over 2,000 students have participated in the program since its inception in 1996. The program offers students opportunities to understand the preparation needed to become a teacher, by exposing them to campus life and connecting them to pre-professional pathways into professional careers.
