Peace
This holiday season presents a wonderful opportunity for me to reflect and to be thankful for the opportunity to serve as OPUS Dean of the College of Engineering at Marquette University. Our alumni and friends have welcomed me into this caring community over the past five months. I am grateful for the generosity you have shown, and I look forward to continuing our insightful conversations. I have quickly come to realize the passion that exists among our alumni and friends which will only enhance the reputation of our college and enable our students to receive the best engineering education possible.
May your holidays be filled with family, peace and joy.
Cheers!
Bob BishopServing the Milwaukee community
Members of the Builders Coalition of Marquette University, the student chapter of the Association of General Contractors, have been busy in the Milwaukee community living out their commitment to service.
They joined forces with Milwaukee-area construction industry members to form a team and participate in the recent Milwaukee Start! Heart Walk. The “Building Healthy Hearts” team, 389 members strong, raised almost $45,000 of the more than $416,000 raised by the Milwaukee walk. This annual event, sponsored by the American Heart Association, brings communities together in celebration of progress in the fight against heart disease and stroke.
Volunteers from the Builders Coalition and members of the Construction Leadership Council of the AGC of Greater Milwaukee joined children from the Sojourner Truth Family Peace Center on a fun and active day at a local farm – complete with a corn maze, hay rides and a pumpkin patch. Sojourner Truth Family Peace Center is a Milwaukee organization dedicated to creating peaceful communities in which domestic respect and a life free from violence is the right of every woman, man and child.
Marquette is “Developer of the Year”
Marquette has been selected “Developer of the Year” by Wisconsin Builder magazine for its annual “Newsmakers of the Year” issue, which will run in November. Construction of the Discovery Learning Complex helped Marquette earn this recognition.
Student construction competition
Two, six-person teams from the Builders Coalition of Marquette University travelled to Illinois to participate in the Associated Schools of Construction’s regional student competition. Marquette teams competed in the commercial and heavy civil divisions – preparing bid proposals for rehabilitation of a Metra Rail Station and a runway addition at O’Hare Airport, respectively. This is the first year Marquette teams have participated in this extremely competitive event; their outstanding efforts were commended by the event judges. Opportunity for international study
In anticipation of a student exchange in fall 2011, representatives from the North American Consortium on Rehabilitation Engineering and Technology for the Individual (NARETI) consortium visited Marquette in October, meeting with biomedical engineering faculty and touring research laboratories. Partner institutions include Marquette; University of Illinois at Chicago; University of Calgary; University of Toronto; University of Guadalajara; and Tecnológico De Monterrey (ITESM) Chihuahua.
This partnership provides opportunities for students to enroll in engineering technical elective courses; participate in international engineering service and design projects; conduct biomedical research; participate in clinical rotations or industrial internships; and also take cultural and/or language courses at one of the respective partner institutions in Mexico and Canada. The project, supported by the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) for North American Mobility in Higher Education, provides student travel scholarships and project support through 2014. For more information contact Dr. Barbara Silver-Thorn.
$4.75 million grant to help children with disabilities
Marquette has been named a national Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center by the U.S. Department of Education and will receive nearly $5 million over the next five years to implement four research and four development projects aimed at addressing the needs of children with orthopaedic disabilities.
Dr. Gerald Harris, professor of biomedical engineering, is the principal investigator for the MU-RERC project, which will also involve other departments at Marquette. Read more.

New website offers prayer resources
Connect with your Marquette family through a new website offering prayer and faith resources.
You can share prayer requests for loved ones, send prayer cards and learn more about prayer traditions. The website also offers prayer resources and information about the faith community at Marquette.
Wheelchair workshop
Biomedical engineering graduate students in the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics II course attended a wheelchair workshop in the OREC Motion Analysis Laboratory in the Department of Orthpaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
The workshop covered wheelchair usage, training, prescription and design requirements. Students also learned about wheelchair testing procedures and the processing, exporting and interpretation of data.
The workshop presented a unique hands-on learning experience, and students benefited from the extensive experience of Dr. Jason Long, chief of motion analysis at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Joseph Krzak, P.T. PCS, senior motion analysis physical therapist and Adam Graf, M.S., senior motion analysis engineer – both from the Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago.
