MU engineering at Neuroscience 2011
The Society of Neuroscience held its annual meeting, Neuroscience 2011, earlier this month. Neuroscience 2011 is the premier venue for neuroscientists from around the world to debut cutting-edge research on the brain and nervous system. Several graduate students from the biomedical engineering department represented Marquette University through poster presentations and talks. Presenting under the guidance of Dr. Scott Beardsley, Dr. Robert Scheidt, Dr. Brian Schmit and Dr. Kristina Ropella, were: Lior Brotzer, Megan Heenan, David Herzfeld, Yan Ma, Jain Mangalathu, Ryan McKindles, Nicole Salowitz and Eric Walker
These students and their faculty mentors are developing innovative technologies to improve rehabilitation for individuals with disease or disabilities of the nervous system. Learn more about the specific research of these faculty mentors and their students; Dr. Beardsley, Dr. Ropella, Dr. Scheidt and Dr. Schmit.
Save the date
The College of Engineering Alumni Association (COEAA) will present its annual Silent Auction and Basketball Game on Saturday, February 11, 2012, when Marquette plays Cincinnati on National Marquette Day. The silent auction, raffle and brunch, which will take place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, begins at 10:30 a.m. Tip-off at the Bradley Center is at 2 p.m.

Pilot research grants
Several biomedical engineering faculty members have been awarded Pilot Research Grants through the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) of Southeast Wisconsin. Dr. Said Audi, associate professor; Dr. Scott Beardsley, assistant professor; Dr. John LaDisa, assistant professor; Dr. Brian Schmit, professor and Dr. Michelle Johnson, adjunct assistant research professor, have all received funding to support research in areas such as motor control, sensorimotor function and computational cardiology.
In 2010, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded a $20 million grant to this consortium of eight Milwaukee institutions dedicated to transforming biomedical research in southeast Wisconsin, accelerating the translation of research discoveries and advancing patient care and education. The eight member organizations are Marquette University, the Medical College of Wisconsin, the Milwaukee School of Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Blood Center of Wisconsin, Children’s Hospital and Health System, Froedtert Hospital and the Clement Zablocki VA Medical Center. Dr. Kristina Ropella, professor of biomedical engineering, serves as co-director of the Translational Technologies & Resources Program and Dr. Brian Schmit, professor of biomedical engineering, serves as co-director of the Pilot & Collaborative Clinical & Translational Research Program.
