eLIMO getting ready to roll
In 2007, a group of senior students at Marquette University's College of Engineering investigated ways to improve the student transportation system on Marquette's campus as part of their capstone senior design project. The team discovered that an electric vehicle would be more efficient than the gasoline vehicles already in use. At the time, no commercial solutions existed for this problem, and the team decided to convert a van from a gasoline vehicle to an electric vehicle. Since 2007 a retired Ford E-350 van has been obtained from Marquette’s Department of Public Safety; an Azure Dynamics motor and motor controller was purchased and installed; and the vehicle has been driven from a tethered power source.
During the 2009-2010 school year the senior design team was able to secure funding through a $65,000 grant from the Wisconsin Office of Energy Independence. The 2010-2011 team members are Dan Chrostowski, Dex Delfrate, Alex Felhofer, Patrick Kortendick, James Lubow, Scott Sullivan, Justin Thompto and Nick Voelz. They are using the grant monies for working on the battery carriages design; developing the user interface; and purchasing the remaining parts to make the vehicle run. These parts are starting to arrive and are being tested and integrated into the vehicle in the team’s new shop space, Marquette University's old service garage. By the end of the semester it is expected that the vehicle should run under its own power with hopes that the registration process can be completed at this time as well, enabling the eLIMO to run on city streets. The eLIMO will be on display at the upcoming Green Energy Summit, March 9-10 at the Frontier Airlines Center in Milwaukee.

$40,000 for engineering scholarships
A successful COEAA Silent Auction & Brunch was a highlight of National Marquette Day. More than 300 College of Engineering alumni, parents, students, faculty and friends packed the Crystal Ballroom at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center on January 29 to help raise money for engineering student scholarships. Event proceeds are expected to top $40,000 this year, which directly will impact the college’s ability to attract the best and brightest students to Marquette’s engineering program.
OPUS Dean Bob Bishop and his wife Lynda enjoyed the event for the first time this year and took special note of the long-standing tradition talked about among so many within the Marquette Engineering family. In addition to the silent auction this year’s event featured an item and cash raffle; student projects; and student speaker Elyse O’Callaghan, Eng ’13 who spoke of her journey to Marquette as a scholarship recipient.
The College of Engineering Alumni Association is grateful for the outpouring of support by so many. A special note of thanks goes out to this year’s sponsors: Presenting – Sargent & Lundy; Gold – Constellation Energy, The McShane Companies, and Raytheon; Blue – Boyle Fredrickson, S.C., Intren, Inc., Kohler Company, STRATTEC Security Corporation and Walbridge.
Jaskolski, Farrell to receive All-University awards in April; College recipients also named
Alumni National Awards Weekend April 28-30. Among the 55 recipients are many extraordinary College of Engineering alumni, including two distinguished College of Engineering alumni announced as All-University award recipients. OPUS Dean Emeritus Dr. Stanley V. Jaskolski, Eng ’62, Grad ’64, ’67, will receive the All-University Merit Award and Michael D. Farrell, Eng ’70, and Donna Behm Farrell, Arts ’70, will receive the All-University Service to Marquette Award. Mike currently serves as a member of the college's National Advisory Council and served as Council chair for seven years.
In addition to Jaskolski and Farrell, the 2011 College of Engineering Award recipients are:
Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award: James H. Grotelueschen, Eng ’73, Grad ’74
Professional Achievement Award: Edmund R. Steinike, Eng ’85
Entrepreneurial Award: Francis S. Luecke, Eng ’67
Service to Marquette Award: Dr. Janis M. Orlowski, Eng ’78
Young Alumni of the Year Award: Stephanie Goplin Olsson, P.E., PTOE, Eng ’00
These outstanding recipients have distinguished themselves in such a way that their peers have suggested them for the honor of an Alumni National Award. As members of the Marquette community, we all take pride in their accomplishments. Spring engineering academies begin
We are kicking off a new season of engineering academies for both students and educators.
The spring 2011 Engineering Academies for K-12 Students program offers ten academies! Through our programs, we hope to challenge our youth to become critical-thinking problem solvers and appreciate the engineering design process. We’re in our sixth year and continue to develop and offer unique opportunities for students to have fun while solving real engineering problems. Register for academies online.
In addition to programs for students, we offer Workshops in STEM Education, professional development for K-12 teachers and educators. Six programs covering wide-ranging topics from "Science, Literature and Math, Oh My!" and "Engineering is Elementary" to "Survival Guide for the Middle School Science Teacher" and more. EWB returns to Guatemala
In March seven students; faculty member Dr. Mark Federle, professor and McShane Chair in Construction Engineering and Management; and industry mentors Tom Zalweski of Bloom Companies, LLC and Christie Walker of CH2M Hill will travel to the village of Nueva Providencia in southwestern Guatemala to continue work on the Marquette Engineers’ Without Borders (EWB) Micro-Hydro/18 Panel PV electric system for the community. EWB began working with the community in 2008 and this is the fourth trip the group has made to the village. The community consists of 44 families comprising approximately 250 people. At this time five residences and the community center have electricity. Another trip is planned for May that will include installing solar panels and wiring houses.
Construction equipment donations were received from Generac, Findorff, The OPUS Group, KBS Construction and Staff Electric. All solar panels have been donated by BPSolar and grants were received from CH2M Hill, Rotary Club of Milwaukee and the Helen Bader Foundation.

You are invited to celebrate St. Patrick, patron saint of engineers, with a tour of the DLC building site. Join us on Thursday, March 10, for a walking tour of the DLC, currently under construction. We will meet near the structures lab in the Pit on the first floor of Haggerty Engineering around 3:15 p.m., the tour begins at 3:30 p.m. You must wear closed-toed shoes, long pants and personal safety equipment (safety equipment will be provided).

Goldberg MDEA awards’ juror
Dr. Jay Goldberg, director of the Healthcare Technologies Management Program and associate professor of biomedical engineering has been selected to serve as one of twelve jurors for the 2011 Medical Design Excellence Awards.
The Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) competition is the premier awards program for the medical technology community, recognizing the achievements of medical product manufacturers and the many people behind the scenes—engineers, scientists, designers and clinicians—who are responsible for the groundbreaking innovations that are changing the face of healthcare.

Congratulations to Nelsy Hernandez on her selection as the “Scholar of the Week” for the week of February 14-20, 2011, on the Great Minds in STEM website which individually highlights students selected from the pool of 2010 Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Corporation (HENAAC) Scholarship recipients.
Nelsy is a sophomore in mechanical engineering and is a 2010 HENAAC- Cummins scholarship recipient.
