EWB-USA Premier Project Award
The Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) Marquette University Student Chapter has been named the 2011 recipient of the EWB-USA Premier Project Award for their water supply project in Honduras.
The award recognizes excellence in EWB-USA projects and highlights projects that deliver high quality, sustainable solutions to help meet the basic needs of partnering communities abroad.
“The EWB-USA Marquette University Honduras Project team’s new water supply system greatly enhanced the community’s access to clean, safe, reliable water,” said Cathy Leslie, executive director of Engineers Without Borders USA. The project included Train-the-Trainer education for the community, to ensure that safe hand washing and sanitation practices continue on after the chapter leaves; it is with great pleasure that we recognize them as a premier project.”
The communities of Joyas de Carballo, El Junco and El Encinal are three towns located northeast of Tegucigalpa, Honduras in the region of Francisco Morazan. Members of these communities, a total population of less than 500, suffer from parasitic and bacterial illnesses that result from dirty water, and poor hygiene and sanitation practices. The Marquette University EWB-USA project aims to unite the communities; develop a clean, accessible, potable water resource; and provide education on relevant health and sanitation issues.

Engineers, teachers, school administrators and parents are invited to participate in the "Family Engineering" workshop held May 14 at the COE. Family Engineering is a new program developed, with support from the National Science Foundation, to engage parents and their children in fun, hands-on engineering activities and events. Family Engineering provides a collection of nationally field-tested engineering activities. Modeled after the popular Family Science and Family Math programs, Family Engineering introduces parents and K-8 children to the exciting world of engineering by providing resources for families, schools, and organizations to facilitate informal engineering experiences in their communities.
Participants will be provided with a copy of the new Family Engineering Event & Activity Planning Guide, and the opportunity to try more than a dozen of the guide’s hands-on activities. They will also learn how to host a Family Engineering event in their community, and how these events can be used for promotional or fundraising activities.

Join the College of Engineering Alumni Association (COEAA) for a fun-filled day of service at Community Planting Day. Organized by the Menomonee Valley Partners (MVP), Community Planting Day is an annual beautification effort in the Menomonee Valley. Volunteers will plant hundreds of trees in an effort to further green what was once Milwaukee’s most famous brownfield. Engineering alumni, parents, friends and their families are most welcome. Space is limited, so register early.

Summer engineering academies
The summer 2011 Engineering Academies for K-12 Students offer a wide variety of programs for students of all ages. Through our programs, we hope to challenge our youth to become critical-thinking problem solvers and appreciate the engineering design process. We’re in our sixth year and continue to develop and offer unique opportunities for students to have fun while solving real engineering problems. Register for academies online.
Outstanding teacher and researcher awards
Dr. Phil Voglewede, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, has been selected to receive the 2011 Outstanding Teacher Award for the College of Engineering. Recipients of this award are selected through balloting of this year’s senior-standing students (anticipating graduation within that year) in selected senior classes. Congratulations to Dr. Voglewede on this well-deserved recognition.
Dr. Fabien Josse, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been selected to receive the Outstanding Researcher Award for 2011 for the College of Engineering. His current research interests concentrate on sensors, particularly chemical and biochemical sensors. Recipients of this award are recognized for excellence in research by a faculty member during the last five years. This award is based on selection criteria that include; significant publications, funded research, graduate student productivity and “state of the art” technology. An independent selection committee selected Dr. Josse to be this year’s recipient. Congratulations to Dr. Josse on this well-deserved recognition.

Senior from Sheboygan, Wis., national student employee of the year
Marquette University student Travis Huhn, a senior in the College of Engineering from Sheboygan, Wis., has been named the 2011 National Student Employee of the Year Award winner by the National Student Employment Association for his leadership and initiative with Marquette’s Student Safety Programs. Jacoby and Meus honored
Professor Frank Jacoby; associate chair, adjunct assistant professor and director of undergraduate electrical engineering laboratories; and Professor Jon Meus, adjunct assistant professor of Civil, Construction and Environmental engineering, were recently honored by Marquette's St. Joan of Arc chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH).
Jacoby received the Faculty STAR award. This award is designed to recognize professors who have made an impact on the lives of students living in Marquette residence halls and/or university apartments and who embody the TEACH paradigm; Total Dedication, Enthusiasm, Admiration, Cura Personalis and Helping Hand.
Meus received the Faculty hALL Star Award. This award is given to faculty members who have participated in a program in the residence halls and/or university-owned apartments and made an impact on the lives of students living in Marquette housing. The award honored his participation in the "Dinner with a Professor" program with students on the three engineering floors of Carpenter Tower at Cobeen Hall.
Baker named engineering outreach coordinator
Molly Baker, Eng ’07, has been named Engineering Outreach Coordinator for the College of Engineering. She has a degree in mechanical engineering and most recently worked for Caterpillar in Minneapolis, Minn. Molly has returned to Marquette to study for an advanced degree in business. She has also been engaged with the college for the past year as director of our “iHeels” Motorola Innovation Generation grant.

Ishii in Morocco
Dr. Thomas K. Ishii, professor emeritus of electrical and computer engineering, presented his research paper entitled Space Constants of Auxiliary Waves at the recent PIERS 2011 (Progress In Electromagnetics Research Symposium) in Marrakech, Morocco.
This paper deals with electromagnetic waves propagating space; one and single isotropic homogeneous physical space can be multiple numbers of anisotropic and inhomogeneous Maxwellian spaces. Propagation speed of some of these waves is superluminal.
Anaerobic treatment short course
If you deal with high-strength industrial wastes and need to find the most effective method to handle them, or are involved in operation or design of anaerobic treatment processes, this course is intended for you. The course will be held Sept. 14-15 on the Marquette campus. Detailed information and course registration.
