Celebrate!
Join us October 7 for the Opening Celebration of Phase I of Engineering Hall. A short program will begin at 3 p.m. followed by an open house and tours of the new, 115,000 square-foot engineering building located at 1637 W. Wisconsin Avenue. Come see how our students and faculty will learn, discover and be the difference as they tackle global challenges in a setting that will educate and inspire.

Designing solutions
All senior engineering students are required to take a capstone design course, commonly known as Senior Design. A multidisciplinary team of students tackle a real-world problem and develop a solution. Project ideas come from industry, faculty and students. Teams analyze, study, experiment, build, create, test, write and present a final product to students, faculty and industry sponsors.
The 2011-12 seniors are currently working on 33 different projects. Seven of these projects were initiated by students. Companies sponsoring projects include Medtronic, DePuy, GE Healthcare, Rockwell, Hospira, Sentry Equipment, AO Smith, Whirlpool, Direct Supply and Green Whale Technologies. Other sponsoring organizations include Marquette GasDay, Marquette Department of Public Safety, the Milwaukee Police Department., Our Next Generation, Engineering World Health and Mental Health America. Approximately 30% of the projects are service learning, assistive technologies, products for developing countries and other technology-for-others projects.
Mathison joins faculty
We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Margaret Mathison joined the faculty of the college in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. She completed her B.S. degree in mechanical engineering at Iowa State University and her Ph.D., also in mechanical engineering, at Purdue University. Her teaching and research interests are in the area of building energy efficiency. Welcome to the Marquette engineering family.

Decent and affordable housing
Service is one of the pillars of a Jesuit education. Service Learning is an academic program that enables students to perform meaningful community service related to their courses. Combining community service with classroom theory enriches students' learning, personal growth and sense of civic responsibility. At the same time, this work builds community and enhances the efforts of the collaborating agencies.
Decent and Affordable Housing is a service learning course offered by the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering and taught by Bob Timberlake. This year students are building the deck and roof for a porch on a Habitat for Humanity home in Milwaukee’s Washington Park neighborhood. On the second day of class students gathered in the EMST lab in Engineering Hall to build a couple of stud walls to learn how a Habitat for Humanity house is constructed. The walls will remain intact in the lab to be used in testing against simulated earthquake stresses.

eLIMO project in the news
The college’s eLIMO project was recently featured in The Institute, the monthly electronic newspaper of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. The article, entitled “The Road Ahead”, covered various student member electric and hybrid vehicle projects.
Future MU engineers
St. Mary’s Academy in Englewood, Colo., was a stop on a recent recruiting trip for Dr. Jon Jensen, associate dean of enrollment management, and Molly Baker, Eng. ’07, engineering outreach coordinator. Molly spoke to high school students about women in engineering and gave a lesson on bridge building. The students then designed, built and load tested model bridges using 20 spaghetti strands.
