The Environmental Engineering Laboratory (EEL) contains equipment to test chemical, biological and physical properties of water, wastewater, sludge, and gaseous materials. Bench space and equipment for research and pilot testing of environmental processes are also available for graduate and undergraduate education and research. The mission of the EEL is to provide students, faculty, industry and government agencies with state-of-the-art, hands-on research space and educational experiences related to environmental engineering. Current and recent funding agencies include the following: US Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, CH2M HILL, Green Bay, WI Metropolitan Sewerage District, Xylem, Inc., Environ, Veolia Water and AECOM.

The facility is used in the CCEE undergraduate courses CEEN 4515 Environmental Chemistry, CEEN 4530 Environmental Engineering Microbiology and CEEN 4995 Independent Study in Civil and Environmental Engineering as well as the graduate courses CEEN 6520 Environmental Laboratory I – Analyses, CEEN 6521 Environmental Laboratory 2 – Processes and CEEN 6995 Independent Study in Civil Engineering.
Current research is directed at biological, physical and chemical processes for water and wastewater treatment as well as renewable energy generation from residual materials.
