Frequently Asked Questions


When and how do I register?

Online registration for the 2017-18 is now closed.  We typically do not accept students after September because the lessons are sequential and the students will learn best if they are present the whole year.  If you have missed this registration period, please try us again the next August!

Where are classes held?

On Marquette University’s campus, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In the past, we have used Engineering Hall (1637 W Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee) and Cudahy Hall (1313 W. Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee).

How often are classes held?

Every Tuesday from 6 - 8 p.m., except for when Marquette University is not in session. Classes run from September through April.

Can my student miss classes?

Because of the nature of learning computer programming, we encourage students to attend at least 80% of classes. If students must miss, they can contact their instructor to receive that week’s work.

Do you accept boys?

Yes. We accept and teach any student in grades 5 - 12 who shares our goal of reaching gender parity in the computing fields, which does include male allies.

Do you have laptops?  

We have 25 Chromebooks we can lend to students. If your student has access to a laptop or Chromebook, please send it with them. We have reliable wireless Internet in all classrooms.

Can I use my school Chromebook or tablet?

Yes. As all the work is done in a web browser, a Chromebook or tablet is all that is needed to participate.

How much does this cost?  

This program is free, including instruction, space, and materials. Because the club meets over dinner time, families are asked to contribute an annual donation of $127 to help offset the cost of dinners for participants ($5 per student per week). For families who are not able to afford this suggested donation, please contact the Enrollment Management Office at 414-288-6720.  For families who are able to contribute more, to help sustain the program for others, we offer an opportunity for additional contributions via the online registration page.

What is expected of the students/what skills should they have entering in the program? Does my child need experience?

The only expectation we have our our Level 1 students is that they have a good attitude and willingness to learn. No technical or math skills are required to register for Level 1. Students progress to Level 2 and Level 3 after successfully completing the prior levels.

Who are the instructors?

The instructors are current college students studying Engineering or Computer Science. The instructors pass a technical skills assessment and background check, both provided by the national Girls Who Code organization. The instructors are aided by 3 - 4 volunteers, who are both college students and professionals in the area.

What do the students learn?  

Level 1 students learn the fundamentals of Computer Science using the Python programming language, in an environment called Codesters. Level 2 students learn web development, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Level 3 (starting Fall 2017) will be project-based learning, focusing on real-world problems in our community.

Do you provide food for the students?

We provide a light dinner. We suggest that students bring a water bottle or something to drink.

Can you provide transportation?  

We do not transport students to or from Marquette University.

Do you have summer classes?

GWC weekly classes do not continue during the summer. As an alternative, Marquette University has summer Engineering Academies, and Girls Who Code hosts Summer Immersion Programs in select cities.

What types of guest speakers does the program host?

We invite college professors at Marquette, industry professionals, and other campus leaders to speak at GWC. With our guest speakers, we expose students to the practical applications of programming, and introduce them to inspiring role models.
