Learning the Design Process. Your freshmen students were in a team poster competition last December 10th as a wrap up to a segment of their Engineering Discovery 1 course. During fall semester, students in the Engineering Graphics & Design class, taught by Dr. Hyunjae Park, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, were busy making virtual computer models of the machinery located in the current Discovery Learning Center (DLC) shop. First they measured the machinery in detail, with each student responsible for creating a virtual copy of a component of a machine. Then the members of each team “assembled” the components on computer to make the models. The winning models will now be included in a model of the entire DLC shop, which will be used in designing and promoting the proposed new building. Designing Clausing Mill Machine was the winning poster by the team “As a Whole,” with team members as follows (each design team selected Captains, Lieutenants and Infantry Members): Captains: Matt Plank, Natanael Ramos and Manny Villa From hand sketching to component modeling to assembly modeling, all of the students were exposed to real world challenges, team building, and expertise in design. Lead Picture: Presenting a team's design work. |

The Next Generation. The January 2009 issue of The Milwaukee Magazine features Dr. John LaDisa, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, as one of the “smart, creative people under the age of 40 who are making a difference in the city.” Dr. LaDisa studies the cardiovascular system and his research has led to the creation of tools such as a newly designed stent to restore blood flow and help remedy heart defects. His laboratory is looking at changes in blood flow through the cardiovascular system and how that relates to disease. The results could affect knowledge of diabetes, stroke, heart disease and other diseases. Dr. LaDisa also has three medical patents pending. |
