2006 REU Participants
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES (REU)
* Program Announcement - Summer 2007 *
REU in Biomedical Engineering: Imaging, Modeling and Rehabilitation of Neurosystems
June 4 - August 3, 2007
The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Marquette University, with the support of a grant from the National Science Foundation, is pleased to announce its Summer Research Program for 2007. The department seeks undergraduates in biomedical engineering to participate in innovative and interdisciplinary biomedical research aimed to improve the quality of life of individuals with neurological dysfunction or disease. The focus of the 9-week summer project is imaging, modeling and rehabilitation of neurosystems, drawing on faculty strengths at Marquette University and The Medical College of Wisconsin.
For samples of past research, please review these projects.
Eligibility: The Department of Biomedical Engineering is looking for 10 qualified and highly motivated students for this summer program. Specifically:
- Undergraduate students majoring in biomedical engineering or a related field, with a strong interest in pursuing a graduate degree in biomedical engineering
- Students who have completed their sophomore or junior year and have completed one year each of biology, chemistry, physics and calculus as well as a computer programming course
- Students who have a minimum of a 3.2 (out of 4.0) grade point average
- Students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents
Applications are encouraged from students currently attending universities or colleges that do not offer comparable opportunities for undergraduate research. Additionally, we encourage applications from underrepresented groups such as women, minorities and persons with disabilities.
Support: Participants in the 9-week program receive a support package worth over $6000.
This includes a stipend of $3420, housing in Marquette University housing, and funds for food and travel.
Environment: The Departments of Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Exercise Science and Physical Therapy at Marquette University and the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Radiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin offer superior facilities for imaging, modeling and rehabilitation of neurosystem function. Marquette University is located just west of downtown Milwaukee and the Medical College of Wisconsin is approximately 5 miles west of Marquette's campus with easy access via public bus. Funds for bus transportation will be provided for those students engaged in research at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Application Process: Applicants must submit a complete application consisting of:
- The application form
- Official college transcripts
- Three letters of reference from college faculty
- Brief essay describing research interests and long term career goals
Application Deadline: January 31, 2007. All application materials should be sent to:
