Latin American Studies Major

Latin American Studies majors and minors ask new and critical questions about hemispheric identity, diversity, borders, sustainability, and social justice. Whether you're interested in a particular country, region, or issue, or want to learn more about the Americas as a whole, you will gain a broad, comparative view including the United States, where Latin American descendants constitute nearly one-fifth of our country’s population.

Expand Your Toolkit.

Latin American Studies majors and minors view the region from many perspectives, including History, Literature and Cultural Studies, Peace Studies, International Affairs, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, Economics, Business, Social Welfare and Justice, and Theology. You will engage a variety of disciplines while identifying your own approach and honing your Spanish language skills.

Forge Global Connections.

Put your skills to use through our study abroad programs in Chile and Peru, faculty-led courses to Mexico, Argentina, and Cuba, and service and immersion experiences from Milwaukee to El Paso to Central America. The Latin American Studies program has built-in electives to allow for flexibility in choosing when to study abroad.

Some of the classes you'll take:

  • Comparative Urban Political Economy
  • Afro-Hispanic and Afro-Latinx Literatures and Cultures
  • History of Latin America
  • Latin America and the Martyrs
  • The Transnational Game: Soccer, Social Justice, and National Identity
  • Global Aid and Humanitarianism
  • Latin American Philosophy
