"Growing in Love and Wisdom: Adapting Buddhist Meditation for Christian Prayer"
Please join us as we welcome Susan Stabile, Robert and Marion Short Distinguished Chair in Law at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, who, drawing from her recently published book, Growing in Love and Wisdom: Tibetan Buddhist Sources for Christian Meditation, will explore some of the common values and understandings that underlie Christianity and Buddhism and talk about how meditation practices drawn from the Buddhist tradition (fifteen of which are presented in her book) can enrich Christian spirituality. In the course of this exploration, Susan will tell us of her own faith journey from Catholicism to Buddhism and back to Catholicism, and how Buddhism continues to enrich her Christian practice. The presentation will include a guided meditation based on one of the meditations in her book.
Susan Stabile was raised as a Catholic, devoted 20 years of her life to practicing Buddhism, and was ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun before returning to Catholicism in 2001. She is a spiritual director and retreat leader and spent several years as a member of the adjunct ministerial staff of a Jesuit retreat house.
Susan is author of the blog, Creo en Dios! (http://susanjoan.wordpress.com) on which she posts daily spiritual reflections and occasional podcasts. Besides holding the Robert and Marion Short Distinguished Chair in law at the University of St. Thomas (Minneapolis) School of Law, Susan also serves as a fellow of the Holloran Center for Ethical Leadership and offers retreats and other programs of spiritual formation for students, faculty, staff and alumni, as well as for other groups in the Twin Cities.
A reception and book sale/signing of Growing in Love and Wisdom: Tibetan Buddhist Sources for Christian Meditation will take place immediately following Susan's presentation.
