The department welcomes Dr. Jeffrey K. Coleman, assistant professor of Spanish who earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago,and Dr. Michelle Medeiros, visiting assistant professor of Spanish, Ph.D. from Purdue University. Dr. Enaya Othman, Ph.D. from Marquette University, will also be joining the department as the first-ever assistant professor in Arabic.

Congratulations to Claudia Pessarelli, Italian Instructor, who received a grant from the Italian Ministry of Foreign affairs, through the​ Istituto di Cultura and the Chicago Italian consulate. The grant promotes the teaching of Italian language in the world and to maintain the Italian program at Marquette University.

Eugenia Afinoguénova (Spanish) and Pamela Hill Nettleton (Journalism and Media Studies, Diederich College of Communication) have won the Way Klingler Teaching Enhancement Award for 2014-15 for their proposal, “Clear Picture: Looking at Communities from an Art Museum”. This jointly-taught and student-curatedproject will be carried out in partnership with the Haggerty Museum of Art.

Eugenia Afinoguénova (Spanish) has been awarded the prestigious American Council for Learned Societies Fellowship awarded to scholars in the Humanities and Social Sciences to finalize the manuscript of her book, Spaniards at the Prado: A Leisure Culture History (1819-1939).

Dr. John Pustejovsky received the AATG award as distinguished German Educator for 2012, November 3rd at the WAFLT conference in Appleton, WI.

Dr. Barry Velleman has been promoted to Professor of Spanish Emeritus. This is a much-deserved and very welcome distinction!

Ms. Jing Zhai, Adjunct Instructor of Chinese, April, 2012, to participate in the Ninth Annual Wisconsin Association of Chinese Language Teachers Speech and Pronunciation Contest April 2012, in Madison.   Four students won the participation awards and Fam Tkhukha won second place in the beginner level of non-heritage college group.  Jeffrey Deropp won the third place in the beginner level of non-heritage college group. This was the first year that Marquette University competed in this competition.

April 11-13, 2012, the Foreign Language Department will host  Dr. Rangira Bea Gallimore founder of Step Up! Friday April 13th Bea Gallimore and Sarah Gendron, will conduct a panel discussion on "Post Genocide Rwanda: Restitution, Recognition and Recovery April 11, from 6:00 -8:00. Samantha Kailas, a junior majoring in Classical Languages and Anthropology, has been awarded an internship by the American Institute for Roman Culture for the summer of 2012. She will be joining the field archaeology team to conduct excavations on the Palatine Hill in Rome. We are very proud of her. Dr. Patricia Marquardt.
