_____________________________________________________________________

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers undergraduate programs leading to B.A. degrees in Classical Languages, Classical Studies, French, German, Spanish (Language, Literature and Culture; Spanish for the Professions); minors in Classical Languages, Classical Studies, French, German, and Spanish (Language, Literature and Culture; Spanish for the Professions).

The Department also offers courses in elementary and intermediate Arabic, Chinese, and Italian. In all these programs, the department strives to develop academic excellence in our students within a context of strong ethical and moral foundations based on faith, while providing opportunities for students to assume positions of leadership and service to the human community through the power instilled by competence in a second language and culture.

Most students come to Marquette having taken many years of a language in both junior and senior high school, experienced immersion in a foreign culture, or both. Many students wish to continue pursuing their passions for foreign cultures and literatures, and we encourage them to do so. The goal of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is to place incoming students in the most appropriate level of foreign language study based on their previous exposure to the language.
Students in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, College of Communication, international business majors in the College of Business Administration, and speech pathology and audiology majors in the College of Health Sciences, must satisfy a foreign language requirement for graduation. This may be accomplished by placement, course work, or both.
