Senior Writer
The Senior Writer will be responsible for preparing development communications materials that generate and sustain fund raising success and donor engagement and meet university priorities. Writers on the Advancement Communications team complete projects that vary widely in scope, as is indicated by the description of possible job responsibilities listed below. Ideal candidates for Senior Writer will have some experience both in grant writing and in marketing materials. Candidates who specialize more heavily in one area or the other will still be considered for this position.
The Senior Writer will prepare written proposals, both formal and in letter format, to solicit funds from individuals, foundations and corporations; prepare written reports to individuals, foundations or corporations that recap accomplishments and activities related to the gift or grant supported by that funder or donor; write, edit and/or participate in strategic planning for key development marketing materials designed to build support for Marquette University and its Campaigns, annual giving efforts, and other fund-raising efforts; edit and occasionally write brief background summaries created to help prepare the university's president or other senior administrators such as deans and senior vice-presidents for advancement-related visits with key donors and prospects; write mass solicitation letters, targeting large or small groups of past donors and prospects; write and edit speeches and talking point outlines for University Advancement staff and faculty members for use in meetings or events with key alumni and/or donor groups; serve as a back-up in preparing drafts of presidential stewardship, acknowledgment and condolence letters; and edit and proofread the written work of members within Advancement to ensure all materials meet the highest possible editorial standards.
Serving as an Advancement liasison to various academic and administrative departments and meeting occasionally with these representatives to learn about their successes, challenges, and how the Advancement Communications team and these departments can work together to ensure mutual success, is also a responsibility of the Senior Writer. The Senior Writer will serve, as needed, on committees organized to develop fund-raising and messaging strategies pertaining to specific development priorities.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, English, Journalism or other similar background required, minimum of five years of development and/or fund-raising experience preferred. Candidate should have proven written, verbal and creative skills; the ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail; and experience using Microsoft Word and Outlook. Experience with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Access desirable.
Writing test (time commitment of one hour) required.
