When Marquette competed in Conference USA, it actually had insufficient funding to award all 110 athletics scholarships allowed by the NCAA. Still, our student-athletes and athletic teams excelled in this conference. Today, as in the past, Marquette does not fund 31 full athletics scholarships it is eligible to fund under NCAA limits because of a lack of resources.
The Big East is one of the most competitive conferences in the nation. It is crucial that all Marquette coaches have all the available resources at their disposal — especially athletic scholarships – to attract the most talented student-athletes. This is important because the Big East – which has a 26% television market penetration in the U.S. — provides national exposure for all sports. This is an opportunity for Marquette to gain valuable exposure for the university.
