HOW WE USE YOUR GIFT

A lot of doors have opened up for CJ Egalite since he arrived at Marquette. He says the Ignatian Scholarship he received to attend the university has made it all possible.

"My scholarship has enabled me to have experiences outside of my home in New Jersey and experience more in the Midwest," says Egalite. "I'm learning from others, meeting people I wouldn't otherwise have had the chance to meet."

In turn, Egalite, a passionate volunteer in high school, is an active participant on campus. His aim is to reciprocate what he has received by giving to others.

And give he does. He's active in several high-profile campus service projects, such as Hunger Clean-Up and Urban Connection, and has been coordinator of Marquette's orientation program, helping freshmen acclimate to college life. He can also be seen giving campus tours to visiting high school students and their families, is a retreat leader, works as an intern for the Manresa Project, and coordinates the Freshman Service Project. "They're all great ways to connect with people," he says.

It's also the way Egalite stays grounded.

"Giving is a way to take care of my emotional and spiritual self — it's what I do to balance myself. It allows me to sit back and reflect on what I'm doing with my life. It's also the way I put my own stamp on the university," he says. "I'm becoming my own person, not a collection of other people's experiences. So my stamp is unique."

To Egalite, giving is natural.

"Pay it forward – I can't see it any other way," he says. "Because people are giving to me in the form of a better education, I give to others. It's important to be a part of that chain."
