What is the Three Minute Thesis?

One thesis. One presentation slide. Three minutes.

The Marquette University Graduate School is sponsoring its second annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) event, founded by the University of Queensland in Australia. This unique academic competition is open to all graduate students currently working on a dissertation or thesis and can effectively explain their research in three minutes to a panel of judges and a general audience.

Eligibility and Event Details

  • Register online on or before January 16, 2018 (registration deadline).
  • Registrants must be enrolled during the spring semester of 2018 and must compete in a preliminary qualifying round scheduled for February 2 or February 9, 2018, between 1 and 4 p.m. 
  • Ten finalists will be chosen by the judges to compete in the final round to take place February 23, 2018 in the Weasler Auditorium.
  • Past winners are not eligible to compete. 

3MT® Awards and Recognition

Competition participants will be judged by a panel of judges.

Cash awards include:

  • Winner - $1,000 
  • Runner up - $500  
  • People's Choice winner (voted by audience) - $500 

The winner will advance to represent Marquette University in the Three Minute Thesis regional competition at the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools in Grand Rapids, Michigan on April 5-6, 2018.  Travel and accommodations will be sponsored by the Graduate School.
