Jan Fabre Sculpture Gift on Display
(Milwaukee, WI) Belgian artist Jan Fabre has donated his recent
sculpture titled "Bloeddolkwesp" to the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette
University. Fabre announced that he would create a sculpture specifically
as a gift for the Haggerty Museum during his exhibition Passage, which
was on display at the museum in 1998. The gift was received in March of
2001 and consists of a 27.5 inch sword covered with jewel-beetles. Jan Fabre was born in 1958 and currently resides in Antwerp, Belgium.
His sculptural works consist primarily of jewel-beetles stitched as tapestry
over wire mesh. Fabre regards the beetle as a metaphor for mutation
and resurrection and uses it in his work to depict the tension between
nature and art. In addition to his work as a visual artist, Fabre
is also a writer, opera director and choreographer, and focuses his work
on the conflict between order and chaos. "This gift reflects the Haggerty Museum of Art's ongoing involvement
with European modern artists. This piece is a welcome addition to
our permanent collection. It is a very special gift marking a 20
year association of the artist with the Haggerty Museum" said Curtis L.
Carter, museum director.
