Successfully integrating Haggerty Museum exhibitions and events into the Marquette curriculum is a primary concern of the museum. Educational programs can be tailored to the needs of professors from all disciplines and can focus on current exhibitions or works from the museum’s permanent collection. The Haggerty provides a variety of educational services for school children and adults, including free docent-led tours, teacher packets, hands-on workshops, exhibition-related lectures and gallery talks, performances, and concerts. Gallery guides are available for most exhibitions, and catalogs are published for major exhibitions. For information or to schedule a class or tour, please contact Lynne Shumow, curator of education, at 414-288-5915 or lynne.shumow@marquette.edu.
Water Across Curriculum (WAC) is an outreach program developed and presented by the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University. This arts education program, for 1st through 8th grade students, uses paintings, prints, and photographs from the Haggerty’s permanent collection to address a variety of water-related issues. An in-depth curriculum guide developed by Dr. Lauralee Guibault (associate professor of chemistry, Alverno College and scientist-in-residence, RedLine Milwaukee) and Sylvia Peine (art educator), provides teachers with a variety of ways in which subject matter relating to water can be integrated into classroom curriculum. Topics included in the guide are: water and your body, water and food, water and science/technology, water from the Lake to your home and back, water and pollution, connecting to water (art, recreation and faith), and the power of water (natural disasters, weather). Ms. Peine will present the materials and hands-on workshops to students in MPS and private schools. The presentations can take place in the schools or at the Haggerty Museum. Peine works with teachers, prior to the presentation, to select the subject matter most appropriate for his/her class. Students from Marquette’s College of Education Art 2330 class (Art Across Curriculum) assist Peine with the presentations and workshops. The Water Across Curriculum project, consequently, has the dual focus of training education students to integrate the visual arts into classroom curriculum while teaching elementary school students about water-related subject matter.

Water Across Curriculum Images and Activities
Picasso Across Curriculum (PAC) follows the same model as Water Across Curriculum, using the Haggerty portfolio Picasso-Guernica, featuring 42 lithographs of the preliminary drawings for Picasso’s masterwork, as the point of departure. An in-depth curriculum guide developed by Linda Kreft, (retired director, Technology-Curriculum Resource Center, Milwaukee Public Schools) provides teachers with a variety of ways in which the Picasso portfolio can be integrated into classroom curriculum. Subjects including war, the history of Spain, Picasso’s African and Oceanic influences, and many others are covered in the online guide.
Picasso Across Curriculum Guide for Teachers
Picasso Across Curriculum and Water Across Curriculum presentations are free of charge. For more information or to schedule a presentation, please contact Lynne Shumow at 414-288-5915 or lynne.shumow@marquette.edu.
